Project-Based Learning

These activities illustrate place-based education by presenting core curriculum within the local context - directly relating to students’ own local environment and community.

Whereas LESSON PLANS are full format, formal Lesson Plans, LEARNING ACTIVITIES are brief format, project-based activities.

Finding Learning Activities for Your Class

Learning Activities are listed in 12 subject areas (at left), though most of the activities are cross-curricular.
Subject areas are listed at the end of each Learning Activity, i.e.
  • Science, Business - Primary subject is Science, but a Related Subject is Business
Grade Level Adaptation


Though lesson plans are listed by grade level, most can be adapted to any age. Most of the other learning activities can be adapted to various grade levels, from elementary to high school, depending on your approach and depth. For younger students, you may choose one part of the activity and complete as a teacher-guided lesson. Older students can go beyond what is stated by accessing additional resources and conducting independent investigation

  • topic and objective
  • critical questions to explore

  • starter resources - list of suggested resources. On some, related-topic Learning in the Prairie full-format LESSON PLANS are also listed with these starter resources.  Strongly encourage additional exploration of topics through resources recommended in our Information Resources Section.
  • Curriculum Standards are provided - see document link at top of each subject page.
These Learning Activities can be done as a class, or individuals/groups can tackle them as independent projects.

Adapt and Share - How to Share Page

With teacher input, we can grow and develop this program.  As you utilize these activities, developing and adapting them, please share your experiences with other teachers in our Blog.  Send us your new ideas, approaches, and best resources to share with others in our Flint Hills teaching community. Also, if you develop any supporting materials to go with these activities, or actually develop any into formal lesson plans, we would deeply appreciate your sharing them with us so we can add them to this site. We value your teaching expertise and knowledge of your own place in the Flint Hills. We will recognize contributing educators on our CONTRIBUTING TEACHERS page. With teacher input, we can grow and develop this program.

How to Manage Flint Hills Curriculum Within Your School

We encourage administrators to leave it open to teachers to choose activities they feel would best fit their background and grade or course subject matter.  To avoid duplication and encourage sequencing, we recommend:
  • Teachers share their choices and plans with others in their subject area and with instructors of cross-referenced subjects
  • Schools keep a centrally-accessible record of which lessons have been taught in which subject area and at what level in the school.
If schools want a more comprehensive approach to adopting the program by subject and grade level, we recommend this be a teacher-driven process coordinated by the Curriculum Committee or Director.
